Three thoughts occur to me: 1) One of the best reasons to dislike e-readers is because you can’t deface them, rip out their pages, or make found poetry. 2) That’s a lot of Guinness. 3) Sometimes, although this might be less a true thing than a thing that sounds good in a sentence, I feel like I too am made out of books, or maybe that I am only a painting of a man made out of books.

1, revisited: This seemed pertinent in ‘10; now it seems trivially true — who doesn’t know this? Books as fetishized objects are here to stay — you want the smell of paper. Even unread books are furniture. This won’t change even after the usefulness of digitalization — multimedia texts, easily updated schoolbooks, no-shame pulp paperbacks, portable airplane reading — is fulfilled & becomes too normal to be weirded out by. There was a small boom in writing & articles (most of it digital, natch) about the Death of the Book a year or so ago, & it seems on reflection to have passed.
